Insights and Information about Reiki, Seichem and Sound Healing
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF REIKI?
Reiki is a form of complementary therapy that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. It was developed by Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk, in 1922.
Following a profound spiritual experience during a 21-day meditation retreat on Mount Kurama, Usui reported receiving the ability to facilitate healing through the transmission of life force energy. He subsequently founded the Usui Reiki Ryōhō Gakkai in Tokyo, where he began teaching his system of energy healing and spiritual development.
One of Usui’s students, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, played a pivotal role in formalising and systematising Reiki practice. In the 1930s, he trained Hawaiian-born Reiki Master Hawayo Takata, who later introduced Reiki to the United States. Takata’s teachings and outreach significantly contributed to Reiki’s expansion in the West.
Takata not only translated Reiki concepts for Western audiences but also established core practices still used today, such as the concept of attunements and the tiered structure of practitioner levels. Over time, multiple lineages and styles of Reiki emerged, each building upon the foundational principles introduced by Usui.
Today, Reiki is practised globally across diverse settings, from hospitals and wellness centres to private practices. Its gentle, non-invasive nature and potential benefits for stress reduction, relaxation, and holistic well-being continue to attract practitioners and clients alike. As both a healing technique and a spiritual discipline, Reiki remains a dynamic and evolving modality.
Golden Tera Mai™ Reiki
Kathleen Ann Milner, an American artist, author, and natural healer, is a renowned Reiki Master and teacher who has made substantial contributions to the evolution of Reiki practice. In the 1980s and 1990s, she developed Tera Mai™ Reiki, an esoteric healing system grounded in Universal Initiations and spiritual symbolism.
Milner introduced new teachings and symbols that are now integrated into many popular Reiki traditions worldwide. In the 1990s, she brought Tera Mai™ Reiki to Ireland, where it resonated deeply with practitioners and quickly became the most widely practised form of Reiki in the country.
In the past decade, Kathleen introduced Golden Tera Mai™ Reiki, an advanced system incorporating the latest energetic initiations. I am attuned to this elevated frequency and I am proud to share this transformative energy with fellow Reiki Masters and clients seeking deep, holistic healing and spiritual growth.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND REIKI
Beyond the spiritual and anecdotal, discover the growing scientific understanding of Reiki. Here is research and theories that shed light on how this gentle practice impacts our mind, body, and spirit, exploring its measurable effects on our well-being.
Once rooted exclusively in traditional Eastern healing practices, Reiki is now attracting attention from leading academic and clinical research institutions. Universities such as Harvard, Drexel, and the University of Arizona are validating Reiki's potential to support both physical and psychological well-being. Research studies confirm Reiki’s effectiveness in reducing pain, anxiety, and promoting enhanced post-surgical recovery, affirming what practitioners have long observed.
Reiki for Psychological and Physical Health
A comprehensive study at Harvard University found that a single Reiki session led to significant improvements in both physical and mental health markers, including reductions in pain, fatigue, anxiety, and depression. Participants also reported experiences of deep relaxation, perceptual shifts, and spiritually-oriented sensations, highlighting Reiki's therapeutic effects.
Reiki and Postoperative Recovery
In a blinded, controlled pilot study by the Centre for Reiki Research, in collaboration with Drexel University, the University of Arizona, and Abington Memorial Hospital, 46 knee replacement patients were divided into three groups: Reiki, sham Reiki, and standard care. Only the Reiki group demonstrated statistically significant improvements, including reductions in pain, blood pressure, respiration rate, and state anxiety, underlining Reiki's promise in peri-operative care.
Meta-Analysis on Reiki and Pain
Melike Demir Doğan’s meta-analysis, reviewing four randomised controlled trials with 212 participants, revealed a standardised mean difference of -0.927 on the Visual Analogue Scale. This indicates a clinically meaningful reduction in pain for individuals receiving Reiki compared to those in control groups. The findings support Reiki’s efficacy as a complementary modality for pain management.

REIKI IN HOSPITALS
Reiki is becoming an essential part of hospital care. In the US, over 1,000 hospitals have Reiki programmes. In Ireland, esteemed institutions such as the National Maternity Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Clonsilla, and various cancer support centres have embraced Reiki as a complementary therapy to support patient well-being. The Centre for Reiki Research, in collaboration with Reiki Medic-Care, a UK-based non-profit, is helping bring Reiki treatments to hospital doctors, nurses, and paramedics. These services are provided at no cost, ensuring that medical professionals can access Reiki in a way that fits into their demanding schedules.
Reiki has found a special place in Irish healthcare, with the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin offering Reiki Complementary Therapy Clinic. Medical Reiki Ireland has partnered with the Reiki Federation of Ireland since 2019 to offer Reiki services at the National Maternity Hospital. With overwhelmingly positive feedback, 97% of participants report a positive experience from their Reiki sessions, further validating its value in a hospital setting.
Additionally, Reiki is widely offered in cancer care centres and hospices across Ireland, including St. Joseph’s in Clonsilla and St. Mary’s in Phoenix Park. The growing adoption of Reiki reflects its potential to enhance emotional, physical, and spiritual healing in patients during critical times of recovery.
By integrating Reiki into healthcare, these institutions create a more holistic approach to healing, supporting both patients and healthcare professionals.
